This is because the recently unveiled Galaxy A50 seems to be a step in the right direction. You can also add design to that list, which is quite subjective, but given the smaller notch and the slimmer profile, I'd pick the Samsung over the Poco. If these are the two qualities three if you add design you desire in a smartphone then Samsung has provided you with the perfect smartphone. If performance is what you seek, you will be well suited with the Poco F1 Review. The colour accuracy on the display is certainly much better than the Poco F1.

I guess it can be expected out of Samsung given that it pretty much makes flaw-less OLED panels and the 6. Talking about the drop-notch on the top or as Samsung calls it, the Infinity U display, I think Samsung has done well to embrace the notch as it makes for a larger viewing experience. You can hide the notch if you want to as well. Another thing that should draw people to this device is the fact that it has a triple-camera system. This is not something that can be found in a phone under Rs 20, The most exciting thing about the camera is the inclusion of the wide-angle lens which I was very eager to try out.

The ultra-wide lens on the phone offers a degree field of view which crams in more into the frame from the exact same spot. Although the ultra-wide sensor is great, the image gets distorted at the edges giving the final picture a spherical bend on the sides.

HIGHLIGHTS

Even still it is cool how much of a bigger field of view the ultra-wide sensor brings over the regular one. The 25 MP primary lens has been touted as a low light sensor and I would have to say that I was not disappointed for the most part. The camera also had good noise reduction which is not what I can say for the Poco F1. However, there were instances when the camera failed to recognise low-light scenes and produced a dull image lacking in exposure and detail.

Apart from that, the Poco F1 had more details and better exposure calibration as compared to the Galaxy A Low light performance aside, the phone captures highly colourful images in daylight scenes and also showcases a wide dynamic range. The Poco F1 does not click the most colour accurate photos nor does it have the most dynamic range, but it does get more details in the image.

For most people that is not a deal breaker as vibrant and colourful photos are the in fashion. The third lens is a depth sensor which is used for live bokeh shots. The bokeh effect or Live Focus also works well, with background separation working more times than not. In terms of video, the phone takes good stable videos which can be attributed to the EIS on the device.

The drop-down menu is now quite accessible. Pulling down on the notifications tray covers the entire screen with icons making them easier to reach out to using just your thumb. In general, all icons are now big they can be scaled down and there is less information cramped in the menus than before.

Apart from that, the software is quite customisable with different themes and skins. It appears that Samsung has kept in mind users with smaller hands, those who are tired of using the search option for finding basic settings, while designing OneUI.

There is still the question of bloatware such as the duplicate apps for the gallery, browser, and also the Galaxy Store, which take up space on the home screen and are non-removable but they don't seem to slow down the UI. The digital wellbeing feature was a nice addition however, telling you how many times you have unlocked your phone is the only benefit I could get from it.

I hope that Samsung builds on this UI to perfect it even more and give its fanbase the proper Android experience. The Galaxy A50 is a sturdy phone and also appears to be fancy at the same time. We received the Blue coloured variant which does look eye-catching indeed. On the bottom of the phone, there is a type-C charging port, along with a single speaker unit and a headphone jack. The device has a subtle elegant finish to it and feels quite balanced and slim to hold which makes it better than the Poco in terms of design. Unfortunately, performance has never the forte for Samsung in its mid-range smartphones, or at least performance worth the money. Not since Xiaomi came to the party anyways. Benchmarks don't tell the whole story but it does point us in the general direction regarding the performance of the device.

The Galaxy A50s gets a p resolution, which is crisp and sharp for watching videos, playing games and reading texts. The added bonus here is that the phone also comes with Widevine L1 certification, which means you will be able to stream content on platforms like Netflix and Prime Video in true HD clarity. Out of the box, the Galaxy A50s feels snappy as you would expect. Apps open and load quickly and I didn't encounter any crashes during usage. However, it won't feel extremely fluid or smooth as you will notice some stuttering while scrolling through apps. It will run games like PUBG smoothly on medium graphics, but anything higher than that will cause drops in framerate and lags. The 10nm chipset is quite efficient and helps reduce battery drain while playing games.

Overall, the Galaxy A50s delivers a decent mid-range performance, but one expects a lot more from phones above Rs 20, today. It's speed doesn't come close to what the Redmi K20 delivers in this segment. It even feels more sluggish than the Realme XT that costs around Rs 16, As long as you don't stress it too much, the Galaxy A50s should do fine, but you will need to consciously hold yourself back.

It is unclear when the phone will get updated to Android 10, but Samsung has been fairly consistent at upgrading its portfolio to the latest Android version. One UI also brings a cleaner and smoother interface with a new layout that lets you get most of your work done with just one hand.

Apart from a few Samsung apps, Microsoft office apps and third-party apps like Helo, DailyHunt and Snapchat, you won't find a lot of bloatware on the Galaxy A50s. Galaxy A50s comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor and face unlock. Both the biometric options are slower compared to what brands like Oppo, Realme and Vivo deliver.

The fingerprint sensor, for example, is sluggish and the animation doesn't feel smooth at all. The bottom firing speaker can get loud, but isn't extremely clear at higher levels. Galaxy A50s also supports Dolby Atmos surround sound through wired and Bluetooth headphones. Samsung has upgraded the triple camera setup on the Galaxy A50s.



While the A50 offered a megapixel primary camera, the Galaxy A50s gets a megapixel sensor, which keeps it up-to-date with the competition. The other two cameras in the setup includes an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 5-megapixel depth sensor. The selfie camera has also been bumped up from 25MP to a 32MP sensor. They main camera is able to capture some really good-looking photos in daylight which isn't surprising. Provided there is a good amount of light in your environment, the Galaxy A50s will capture attractive photos.

In low-light however, the phone begins to struggle. The dedicated night mode still doesn't achieve the kind of computational photography that Oppo and Xiaomi are able to deliver. Photos will look grainy despite noise reduction doing its best and the overall picture will appear softer rather than clear and detailed. You can easily switch between the main camera and the wide-angle lens to add more room in the frame. Wide-angle is handy in tough spots or if you're looking for a new perspective shot.

Be mindful that the quality takes a hit when you switch to the 8MP wide-angle lens. Compared to the high-resolution main camera, wide-angle photos will lack detail and sharpness.

There is also a noticeable change in colour tone and the photo will look darker compared to the main camera. The Galaxy A50s can take some sharp and delightful videos in p and 4K.
